Fronts and InteRfaces in Science and Technology
Initial Training Network of the European Commission (Grant Agreement Number 238702), PITN-GA-2009-238702.

SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME, PEOPLE Work Programme 2008

Space-time phenomena giving rise to fronts and interfaces are central issues in many contexts of Science andTechnology. A selection of some of the most challenging ones, most often of multi-disciplinary character, will be pursued by a team of 10 Full Partner Members (8 universities of different countries and two industries, Guigues Environnement (France) and Siemens (Germany)) with the help of 4 Associate Partners.

The project is divided into three general Work Packages A: Image Processing, B: Patterns in Complex Reaction-Diffusion Systems and C: Interfaces, Control and Inverse Methods in Technology Problems.

The training of several early-stage researchers (*) ESR is proposed with an interdisciplinar orientation: besides the presence of the two mentioned industries with special interest in work packages B and C, respectively, most of the mathematicians implied in this ITN in the field of image processing are collaborating with researchers from other fields as in the case of the Technion Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering departments. The presence of two industrial partners will also broaden the range of applications of the training techniques used in FIRST. The Guigues and Simens partners, are in the supervisory board of the ITN, and are involved in the training programme through complementary skills seminars.

The list of structured training courses refers not only to a set of postgraduate courses available in the PhD programmes but to some specialized courses which will be organized for FIRST.  The benefit to the European scientific community will be significant: the training will not only produce researchers with broad backgrounds qualified for academic careers. It will also produce individuals with an understanding of science and with an excellent perspective for a career outside academia.

FIRST gathers 10 Members and 4 Associate Members. The period covered by FIRST is from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013.

A new predoc position will be available (and will be announced soon) within the Initial Training Network (ITN) FIRST, funded by the Marie Curie actions under the FP7 People programme (2008 call) from the European Commision.  The ESR contract will cover some period starting no earlier than May 1, 2013  to December 31, 2013, according the Work Package Problem WPB6.

Most of the PhDs will be prepared between two laboratories of the network, and exchanges between the participants will be strongly favoured. We are currently looking for students with a strong knowledge in subjects such as Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis or Scientific Computing.

The salaries will follow the European regulation with a monthly salary plus mobility allowance, and travel and career exploratory allowances. The candidates can be of any nationality (European or non European), but not from the country in which he/she will be hired.

(*) Early-stage researchers are defined as those who are, at the time of selection by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
