ROYAL SITE OF SAN LORENZO DE EL ESCORIAL

Located fifty kilometres from Madrid, the town grew up around the majestic San Lorenzo de El Escorial Monastery. King Felipe II ordered the construction of the Monastery in 1561 to commemorate his victory in the Battle of San Quintin, which took place on the Saint’s day of Saint Lorenzo.

The town is situated at the foot of Mount Abantos, part of the Guadarrama mountain range, and has an agreeable climate during the summer months. Its cultural interest makes it one of the main centres for tourism and one of the most famous sites in the Madrid region. An excellent train system and bus service connects the town centre to Madrid.
