Call for Tenders for the II MOMAT-ADSA Contest on Mathematical Modelling
|
|
The
MOMAT
Research Group of the UCM and
Advanced Dynamics S.A.
call for the
II MOMAT-ADSA Mathematical Modelling Contest
for students, within the Agreement No. 5901 of the UCM
|
Conditions of the Contest
|
-
Participation in the contest requires the presentation of a Modelling paper
about the
"Statement of the problem"
as specified below.
-
Each paper will be performed by a team of maximum 6 students with no PhD degree.
One out of each team will, for all purposes, act as coordinator (sending of
notifications, etc).
-
Any person may participate who at some time has been registered in a university
(either Spanish or foreign, public or private) and who has no PhD degree before
October 28th, 2008.
-
In order to submit a paper to the contest it is obligatory to send it together
with the proposal form enclosed below, signed by all participants, to the
following address:
Ángel
Manuel Ramos del Olmo
Departamento
de Matemática Aplicada
Facultad de Matemáticas
Universidad Complutense
de Madrid
Plaza de Ciencias,
3 28040-Madrid
Correo electrónico:
angel@mat.ucm.es |
A
signed printed copy either in Spanish or English has to be sent with a copy in
computer format to the above e-mail address, enclosing, if the case be, the
material of graphic, audiovisual, computer or any other nature deemed
appropriate.
-
The deadline for submitting the papers is
October 28th, 2008.
-
The decisions about the winning papers will be taken by the Mixed Monitoring
Committee of the
Agreement No. 5901 of the UCM,
consisting of:
-
On the side of the
Universidad Complutense de Madrid:
-
Juan Antonio Tejada Cazorla
(Dean of the Mathematics Faculty), or person to whom he might
delegate.
-
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz Díaz
(Co-director of the Investigation Team of the UCM), or person to
whom he might delegate.
-
Ángel Manuel Ramos del Olmo
(Co-director of the Investigation Team of the UCM), or person to
whom he might delegate.
The UCM Rector might replace the members of the Mixed Monitoring Committee
designated on the side of the UCM, should they loose or change the capacities on
which their nomination for membership was based.
-
On the side of
ADSA:
-
Gabriel Barceló
(Chairman) or person to whom he might delegate.
-
Alejandro Álvarez
(Secretary of BoM) or person to whom he might delegate.
-
Julio Cano Lacunza
(Member of BoM) or person to whom he might delegate.
-
The prizes consist of one thousand five hundred euros (1500
€)
for the paper which wins the first place and two accesits with sets of
Physics and/or Mathematics books worth
250 €
each for the first and second place.
-
The prizes might remain un-awarded, if there is a lower number of presented
papers or if their quality is insufficient.
-
The decisions regarding this contest will be published on the web page of
the Group MOMAT of the UCM:
http://www.mat.ucm.es/momat
-
A Seminar will be organized in Madrid where the winners of the tender will
present their results and prizes will be handed out. Requisite for the
awarding of the prizes is that at least one member of each group comes to
the presentation and lectures its paper.

Statement of the problem
|
Determinate
the path of the centre of mass of a rigid solid, with axial symmetry, equipped
with an angular momentum on its centre of mass and with respect to a principal
axis of inertia, when some other forces are applied on it and such that, they
would have a null resultant when applied to the centre of mass, but that applied
on other points, they generate an angular momentum non-coaxial with the existing
one in the solid. It must be assumed that the distribution of velocities
generated by this new non-coaxial momentum is composed with any other velocity
on the centre of mass of the rigid solid.
Goals:
-
Determinate the resultant velocity field for each point of the rigid solid.
-
Use the description of velocities obtained in the previous section in order
to determine whether the orbit of any point of the rigid solid is periodic
or not.
-
Develop a programme for the approximation and numerical simulation of the
orbits of the solid points, based on the obtained equations and the given
hypotheses on forces and momenta.
